Casablanca – The Marrakech Stadium is set to shut its doors in the coming days as work begins on a full-scale renovation ahead of the 2030 World Cup.

The project is part of Morocco’s preparations to co-host the tournament with Spain and Portugal, and aims to bring the stadium in line with the technical requirements set by FIFA.

According to converging media reports, officials say the venue will remain closed until the works are completed and final approval is granted.

The most visible change will be the removal of the athletics track, ending the stadium’s multi-sport configuration and turning it into a football-only venue. Sections of the existing stands will also be reworked to bring spectators closer to the pitch.

Once completed, capacity will rise to around 46,000 seats, up from approximately 41,000, following recommendations made during inspection visits.

Beyond the structural changes, the renovation includes technical and logistical upgrades required for international certification. The objective is to ensure the stadium meets the standards necessary to host World Cup fixtures.

During the closure, Kawkab Marrakech will play its home matches at El Harti Stadium until construction is finished.

The overhaul in Marrakech is one of several infrastructure projects underway across the country as Morocco moves forward with its 2030 hosting commitments.
