Rabat – The upcoming Finalissima, the intercontinental match between the champions of Europe and South America, could be heading to Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid after ongoing discussions about relocating the event from Doha.
Originally scheduled for March 27, 2026, the match will feature the Spain national football team, winners of UEFA Euro 2024, against the Argentina national football team, champions of the 2024 Copa América.
Recent developments in Qatar have complicated plans to stage the match there. Security concerns have made it difficult for organizers to proceed with the event in Doha, which was also set to host several other matches as part of a wider football festival.
As a result, attention has shifted to Spain, with the Bernabéu currently emerging as the preferred venue. The stadium, home of Real Madrid, is seen as one of the most suitable locations in Europe for a match of this scale.

Negotiations continue
According to Spanish outlet Marca, while UEFA appears to favor Madrid as the new host city, the final decision still requires agreement from the Argentine Football Association and CONMEBOL.
Some within Argentina’s football leadership are reportedly hesitant about staging the match in Spain, as it would give the European champions a home-continent advantage rather than maintaining a neutral venue.
Despite those reservations, Madrid is considered the strongest option among several alternatives that have been discussed across Europe.
If the Bernabéu is confirmed, authorities will need to coordinate a large-scale security operation. On the same day as the Finalissima, another international friendly between the Morocco national football team and the Ecuador national football team is expected to take place at Metropolitano Stadium, also in Madrid.
Hosting two major international matches in the city on the same day would require careful planning by local officials and security services, although Madrid has previously showed its ability to manage events of such a scale.
The Bernabéu has hosted may high-profile matches over the years, including the 2018 Copa Libertadores Final between River Plate and Boca Juniors, which was moved to Madrid after crowd trouble in Buenos Aires.
That event was organized on short notice and ultimately viewed as a logistical success, strengthening the stadium’s reputation as a reliable venue for a global football show.
