Rabat – The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has reiterated its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara and reaffirmed its attachment to the country’s security, stability, and territorial integrity.
The statement came during the eighth joint ministerial meeting between Morocco and the GCC held Thursday by videoconference.
The session gathered Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, alongside ministers and representatives from GCC member states.
During the meeting, GCC Secretary-General Jassem Mohammed Al-Budaiwi restated the council’s longstanding position in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
The declaration reflected a unified stance shared by all six member states of the Gulf bloc.
The council also welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which renewed international support for a political solution to the dispute.
GCC officials noted that the resolution once again identifies the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole framework for a realistic and lasting settlement.
Participants also voiced support for diplomatic efforts led by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, as well as his personal envoy tasked with facilitating negotiations between the concerned parties.
Delegations that took part in the meeting reiterated what they described as “full and constant support” for Morocco’s territorial integrity. They also rejected any attempt that could undermine the country’s national sovereignty.
Officials said the unified position illustrates the depth of political ties between Morocco and the Gulf region.
Relations between Rabat and GCC countries have developed steadily over the years through diplomatic coordination, economic partnerships, and shared positions on regional and international issues.
The GCCl brings together six Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman, and has repeatedly reaffirmed support for Morocco’s territorial integrity during past meetings with Moroccan officials.
Thursday’s ministerial session once again confirmed the alignment between Morocco and Gulf states on issues they consider central to regional stability and national sovereignty.
Also during the meeting, representatives of the GCC expressed gratitude to King Mohammed VI for Morocco’s support and solidarity with Gulf nations amid rising regional tensions.
Officials from GCC member states referred to Iranian missile and drone attacks against targets in the Gulf, which have entered their third week. The Middle East war began on February 28 with an initial US-Israeli strike on Iran. Iran followed with subsequent attacks on US targets in Gulf countries, which have since expanded onto civilian infrastructure.
