Rabat – Morocco has declared Monday, March 23 an exceptional holiday for all state administrations and local authorities on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr 2026.
According to a statement from the Head of Government’s office, the decision was made in accordance with Article 3 of Decree No. 2.05.916 of July 20, 2005, as amended and supplemented.
The government decision allows the public sector employees and officials to extend their Eid celebration.
Astronomers expect Eid Al Fitr this year to be on Saturday, March 21. This means the Eid holiday will fall on a weekend, which is disappointing news for employees and students living away from their families.
It remains to be seen whether the public sector will also announce Monday a day off for their employees.
Last year, the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) urged the private sector companies to grant employees a day off on Monday, June 9, aligning with the public sector in celebration of Eid Al Adha.
The government had already decided to exceptionally suspend work in state administrations and local authorities on that day.
In response, CGEM called on companies to follow suit.
“We invite, as far as possible, private sector companies to also grant Monday, June 9, as a day off to their employees,” CGEM President Chakib Alj said at the time.
CGEM made a similar request in 2023, urging businesses to extend the Eid Al Fitr holiday as it fell on the weekend.
The specific date for Eid Al Fitr depends on moon sighting, and officials formally announce the exact day on the eve or a day earlier of the feast.
Eid Al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. Muslims head to mosques on the morning of the Eid to perform a special Eid prayer. Families afterwards gather around a breakfast table with various traditional dishes, with the holiday also being marked by an exchange of foods and visits.
