Casablanca – Even as 5G is still spreading across much of the world, researchers are already working on what could come next. The next generation of wireless networks, known as 6G, is now being studied by telecom companies, universities, and international standards groups that are trying to define how future mobile systems will work.
For now, the technology exists mostly in laboratories and research programs. Industry roadmaps suggest the first technical standards could appear toward the end of the decade, with early commercial deployments expected around 2030 in some of the world’s most advanced telecom markets.
Companies including Nokia, Ericsson, and Qualcomm are among those involved in early development. Much of the research focuses on finding new ways to move larger amounts of data through wireless networks.
One approach being tested involves an extremely high-frequency spectrum, including terahertz bands, which could potentially support faster data transmission and more connected devices.
Another idea under study is building artificial intelligence directly into telecom networks. Instead of sending every task to distant servers, networks could process certain information locally, allowing them to manage traffic more efficiently and respond more quickly to demand.
Researchers are also experimenting with technologies that would allow wireless signals to detect movement or objects around them. In theory, this could allow communication networks to double as sensing systems, something that could support connected infrastructure or automated technologies.
After the 5G hype
The growing attention around 6G comes only a few years after 5G became the focus of global excitement. When it first started rolling out, the technology was often presented as a major turning point that would rapidly reshape cities, industries, and everyday life.
In reality, the changes have been more gradual. For most users, the main difference has been faster mobile internet and more stable connections rather than the sweeping transformation that early marketing sometimes suggested.
Part of the reason is that 5G itself is still being deployed in many parts of the world. Building the infrastructure required for a new generation of networks takes time, and many of the applications associated with it depend on systems that are still under development.

Morocco joined the group of countries that have introduced 5G relatively recently. The country’s three main telecom operators launched commercial 5G services in November 2025, marking the start of a broader national rollout.
Since then, operators have begun expanding coverage across different cities as new infrastructure is installed. The goal is to extend high-speed connectivity to more regions over the coming years as part of Morocco’s wider digital development plans.
Because the country is still in the early stages of that process, attention remains focused on expanding 5G rather than preparing for the next generation.
By the time 6G begins to appear in early-adopter markets such as Japan, South Korea, and the US around 2030, many countries will still be completing their 5G networks.
For now, 6G remains a long-term project. But the early research underway today suggests that planning for the next chapter of wireless technology has already begun.
