Rabat – A controversial moment happened at the end of the CAF Champions League match between Esperance and Al-Ahly, which has sparked debate among fans after an Al-Ahly player reacted toward the Tunisian supporters following the final whistle.
Esperance secured a 1-0 win in the first leg of the tie, taking a narrow advantage before the return match in Cairo. The winning goal came from a penalty, giving the Tunisian side an important result in front of their home crowd.
However, attention quickly shifted to what happened after the game. As players were leaving the pitch, Al-Ahly defender Yasser Ibrahim appeared to gesture toward the Esperance supporters in the stands.Â
Footage shared widely on social media shows the player making a hand motion toward his neck while looking at the crowd.
Many fans interpreted the gesture as a message directed at Esperance supporters ahead of the second leg in Egypt. The moment quickly spread online and triggered criticism, with several supporters describing the action as provocative and unsportsmanlike.
Incidents between players and rival fans are not uncommon in matches involving Al-Ahly and Esperance. The two clubs have one of the most intense rivalries in African football and have faced each other several times in major continental competitions.
The return leg in Cairo is expected to be equally tense, though the atmosphere in the stadium will be different this time.
CAF has already imposed sanctions on Al-Ahly following crowd incidents in previous matches. As part of those disciplinary measures, the Egyptian club will play the upcoming match behind closed doors.
The punishment came after objects, including bottles, were thrown from the stands during the AS FARÂ game in Cairo, prompting the Confederation of African Football to take action.
Because of the sanction, Al-Ahly will have to attempt their comeback without the support of their fans inside the stadium.
