Rabat-Moroccan athletics is facing fresh criticism after the country failed to send a single athlete to the 2026 World Indoor Championships, which began on March 20 in Poland. For a nation with such a rich history in track and field, the absence has been widely seen as a major blow and another embarrassment for the Royal Moroccan Athletics Federation (FRMA), which is once again under scrutiny over its management and long-term strategy.

Reports suggest that no Moroccan athlete managed to qualify for this year’s competition, leaving the country completely unrepresented at one of the biggest events on the global athletics calendar. An unusual and worrying situation for a country that once dominated middle- and long-distance events on the world stage. The absence shows a deeper decline that has been building over recent years.

A crisis that keeps deepening

This setback does not stand alone. It comes shortly after Morocco was also absent from the most recent World Cross Country Championships, adding to a growing list of disappointing developments for the sport nationally. Many now see this as part of a broader crisis rather than an isolated failure.

Recent results on the global stage have amplified these concerns. Morocco’s performance was largely underwhelming at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, with only Soufiane El Bakkali managing to secure a medal and save the day for the delegation. Beyond him, there has been a clear lack of depth and talents capable of competing at the highest level.

Criticism has increasingly focused on the federation, with experts pointing to a lack of long-term strategy and insufficient development of the next generation. Indoor competitions, in particular, are often neglected in favor of outdoor events, which has contributed to Moroccan athletes struggling to qualify for this type of championship.

For many analysts, this situation is a sign of deeper issues in how talent is scouted and trained.

The contrast with Morocco’s legacy is striking. The country once produced world icons and consistently competed for medals. Today, however, the reliance on isolated stars like Soufiane El Bakkali only highlights the crisis of the broader system.

The complete absence from a major global event like the World Indoor Championships should be a warning sign. Without structural reforms and a renewed focus on development, Moroccan athletics risks falling further behind on the international stage where they once shone.
