Rabat – Moroccan national team player Ilyass Ben Seghir issued an apology to the Moroccan people after engaging with a post depicting Senegalese fans celebrating at the Stade de France during their friendly clash with Peru.
The player’s interaction with the Senegalese team, which comes in the midst of an escalating judicial battle between Morocco and Senegal over the fallout of the Africa Cup of Nations, sparked widespread controversy among Moroccans.

The ensuing social media backlash prompted Benshir to break his silence and clarify that his actions were unintentional.
In an Instagram story, the player clarified that his interaction was simply a spontaneous reaction to someone he knows.
“I acted without any real intention behind it, simply because I am used to interacting with his posts. As soon as I realized, I immediately removed the like – I would like to remind everyone that, above all, I am Moroccan – I love my country very much and I am proud to represent the national team,” Bensghir said.
“Therefore, I want to clear up any misunderstanding by offering my sincere apologies to all the fans – I now hope to return quickly to the pitch to repay this trust, where every player expresses himself in the best way possible.”
Having chosen to represent Morocco at the international level from a young age despite interest from other countries, Bensghir is one of the Atlas Lions’ most promising emerging talents.
His profile aligns with the modern, technical identity Morocco aims to develop, combining flair with tactical discipline. While still in the early stages of his international journey, he is widely regarded as a future key player for the Atlas Lions.
Ben Seghir’s response to this controversy suggests he remains a dedicated Moroccan player and is committed to representing his country on the field while showing respect for the concerns of Moroccan people.
