Rabat – Paraguay head coach Gustavo Alfaro said Morocco will be one of the toughest teams to face at the 2026 World Cup, after his side lost 2-1 to the Atlas Lions in a friendly match.
Speaking after the game, Alfaro pointed to Morocco’s balance as the main reason behind his assessment.
“Morocco is one of the toughest opponents I have no doubt will make things difficult for any team at the World Cup,” he said.
The match was part of both teams’ preparations for the 2026 tournament, and it gave Alfaro a close look at Morocco’s current level.
“They have two very important qualities for this type of competition,” he said. “First, they can find solutions in both boxes; they can score goals. Second, they can defend very well.”
Alfaro explained that many teams in the World Cup get judged mainly on attacking play, especially in the early stages. But as the tournament progresses, defensive organization becomes just as important.
“At the World Cup, people often look at teams based on how they attack,” he said. “But when you reach the later stages, defensive organization becomes just as important. Morocco, in my view, is strong in both areas.”

He also pointed out Morocco’s midfield, describing it as a key part of the team’s structure.
“They have a midfield that connects the lines very well.”
Alfaro noted that Morocco may not always be in the media spotlight, but that does not reflect its true level.
“I have no doubt that Morocco, even if they are not always in the spotlight, is a difficult opponent,” he said. “They have more experience, more consistency, and a high level of discipline and tactics.”
He linked that strength to Morocco’s recent history, especially their run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Alfaro also spoke about Morocco’s long-term ambition. He believes the team now aims to build on that achievement and push further in future tournaments.
“That shows their natural ambition is to be among the top four again,” he said, “and then compete for the 2030 World Cup. That is a normal step in the development of a team.”
