Casablanca – The 5th Specialized Training for African Union Election Observers kicked off in Rabat today, marking another step in the ongoing partnership between Morocco and the African Union (AU).

This latest edition of the program is a joint effort between the African Union Commission and Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It has brought together a group of 87 prospective observers who have traveled from across the continent to participate.

Speaking to reporters at the opening of the event, Bankole Adeoye, the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, was clear about what is at stake for the region. He said that democracy in Africa needs to be progressive. For him, it is not just about the act of voting but about making sure that democratic systems actually deliver what he called “peace dividends” for citizens.

It must also “ensure that women, youth in particular, and people with disabilities are all catered for,” Adeoye added.

The training is designed to build up the continental body’s ability to monitor and support democratic processes. Adeoye noted that strengthening institutions through transparent and credible elections is the only way to build lasting trust.

He made a point to mention that inclusive governance is a huge part of this. That means making sure women, youth, and people with disabilities are not just sidelined but are active participants in how their countries are run.

By training nearly 90 people at once, the AU is trying to create a deeper pool of experts who can be deployed to various member states. Ultimately, this group will go back to their respective regions and help ensure that electoral outcomes are respected because the process was handled correctly from the start.

Adeoye told the press that the goal is to make sure these processes are held to a high standard. He remains focused on the idea that better elections lead directly to more stability and peace for everyone on the continent.

Morocco’s involvement is strengthening its growing role in hosting such diplomatic and capacity-building initiatives for the AU.
