During a live Instagram session with French rapper Rohff on April 23, Karim Benzema spoke honestly about Madrid’s current predicament and explained why he believes Paris Saint-Germain have become one of the strongest teams in the world under Luis Enrique.

The former Madrid captain, who remains one of the club’s most respected modern legends, suggested that Real Madrid’s biggest issue is not talent but the absence of cohesion, communication, and clearly accepted roles within the squad.

Benzema believes the team is suffering from a lack of collective football, with too many players focused on individual brilliance rather than working for one another.

He summed up the mentality saying: “I’m going to shine, no problem, but without you I cannot shine.”

According to Benzema, the current attacking stars: Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr., and Jude Bellingham are among the most gifted players in the world, but they do not yet seem fully synchronized on the pitch.

He suggested that Bellingham should focus more on creating and connecting play rather than constantly seeking finishing positions and that Mbappé must fully embrace the central striker role. But for that he thinks, greater communication is needed between the front three to maximize their qualities.

Benzema also lamented the absence of veteran leaders in the dressing room, players capable of calming difficult moments and demanding discipline when matches turn complicated.

Praise for PSG under Luis Enrique

In contrast, Benzema described PSG as one of the best teams in the world because every player understands his role.

He pointed out the fact that Paris no longer depends on assembling superstar names. Instead, they operate as a complete unit that presses, defends, and attacks together.

One of the aspects that impressed him most was the mentality of the substitutes. Benzema noted that bench players often enter matches and contribute as much, or even more, than starters, without frustration or ego.

For him, that’s when a squad where responsibilities are accepted and the collective comes first.

Benzema reserved special praise for Luis Enrique, describing the Spanish coach as the real star behind PSG’s transformation.

He credited the manager for creating discipline, tactical clarity, and a winning mentality that has turned Paris into a far more balanced side than in previous superstar-driven eras.

Because Benzema is one of the most respected figures in modern Real Madrid history, his words carry weight. Across 14 seasons at the club, he won 25  titles and captained the team during a transitional era.

His views feed the ongoing debate around Madrid’s current project: a squad overflowing with great attacking talent, but still searching for chemistry and leadership.
