Agriculture and Security: Morocco, Russia Deepen Multilateral Cooperation

Minister Nizar Baraka and Alexander Devaykin, President of the Moroccan-Russian Friendship Group

Agadir – Morocco and Russia are strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple strategic sectors, following a series of high-level meetings held in Morocco between April 20-24.

According to a statement from the Moroccan Ministry of Equipment and Water, Minister Nizar Baraka received in Rabat Alexander Devaykin, President of the Moroccan-Russian Friendship Group in the Russian Federation Council and Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Food Policy, with a parliamentary delegation as part of an official visit to Morocco.

The visit took place within the framework of ongoing efforts to deepen Morocco-Russia relations and explore new avenues of partnership, particularly in agriculture, marine fisheries, and food security.

“This visit is part of efforts to strengthen cooperation relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Russian Federation, providing an opportunity to explore prospects for bilateral partnership, particularly in the areas of agriculture, marine fisheries, and food security,” the Moroccan ministry said.

Through the meeting, both countries emphasized their long bilateral relations, recalling the tenth anniversary of the strategic partnership established in 2016 by King Mohammed VI and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The parties discussed the further strengthening of interparliamentary cooperation, including collaboration between relevant committees and the work of parliamentary friendship groups,” the Russian Embassy in Morocco said.

The discussions stressed the importance of consolidating cooperation in scientific and technical fields, including through academic and institutional partnerships such as collaboration between Morocco’s Hassan II School of Public Works and Russian counterparts.

“The meeting emphasized the importance of strengthening scientific and technical cooperation through partnerships between the Hassan II School of Public Works and its Russian institutional counterparts,” the ministry stated.

The meeting between Nizar Baraka and the Russian delegation also covered several areas of mutual interest, including the digitization of infrastructure, cybersecurity enhancement, development of road and highway systems

“The two sides also discussed a number of areas of mutual interest, including the digitization of infrastructure, enhancing cybersecurity, developing the road and highway sectors in the context of climate change, in addition to cooperation in meteorology and ports,” the ministry added.

Trade relations between Morocco and Russia show steady resilience despite international sanctions pressures, with bilateral trade estimated at around $2 billion.

Exchanges between the two countries cover key sectors such as agricultural goods, fertilizers, seafood, fish products, and industrial equipment.

Morocco mainly exports fruits and maritime products to the Russian market, while importing fertilizers, agricultural inputs, and technological goods from Russia.

Officials from both sides have emphasized that existing economic ties remain stable and continue to evolve, with ongoing efforts to explore new mechanisms to facilitate transactions and expand cooperation in areas such as energy, infrastructure, and agriculture.
