Rabat – The President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, has said that his regional executive aligns with Spain’s official position in support of Morocco’s autonomy proposal. He described it as the most serious, realistic, and credible framework to resolve the Western Sahara regional dispute.

Clavijo made the remarks in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria during a joint press conference today with Karim Achengli, President of the Souss-Massa Regional Council, who led a delegation of institutional and economic representatives on a visit to the Canary Islands.

His statement reflects Spain’s diplomatic line since the 13th High-Level Meeting between Rabat and Madrid, which welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2797. The resolution considers genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a practical path toward a political solution.

Morocco’s Western Sahara dossier has gained notable traction in recent years, with diplomatic positions showing clearer alignment in favor of Rabat’s autonomy proposal.

Several international actors now describe the initiative as a practical framework for settlement, which has added momentum to Morocco’s long-standing approach.

The Canary Islands president stressed that regional authorities remain aligned with Madrid’s foreign policy choices. “We form part of Spain, and we fully respect the decisions taken by our government. We share this agreement,” he said.

Clavijo also referred to his previous visits to Morocco during his mandate, which, according to him, helped strengthen ties between the two sides. He pointed to a series of economic missions that aim to expand cooperation in strategic areas such as the blue economy, tourism, academic exchange, and water management.

The visit by the Souss-Massa delegation comes amid renewed efforts to deepen cooperation between Atlantic-facing regions in Morocco and Spain, with the two sides seeking to expand economic and institutional partnerships beyond traditional frameworks.
