Rabat – The National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has launched a major infrastructure drive to strengthen and secure the drinking water supply of Khouribga and the surrounding areas.
The total investment is estimated at MAD 365 million for the treatment plant at the Ait Massoud dam.
ONEE Director General Tariq Hamane and Khouribga Governor Hicham Medarhri Alaoui presided over the launch on Tuesday.
The event marked the start of works to reinforce the Central Morocco water conveyance system fed by the Ait Massoud dam.
The first phase of the project is estimated to cost MAD 95 million. It is financed through loans from Germany’s KFW development bank and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The project involves supplying, transporting, and laying 14 kilometers of pipelines. These will be made of ductile iron and coated steel, with diameters of 1000 mm and 900 mm.
It is scheduled to enter service in December 2026. The project’s goal is to safeguard long-term water conveyance and secure the drinking water supply for Khouribga and neighboring communities. Â
Officials also unveiled a set of related infrastructure projects, together valued at MAD 270 million.
This includes an extension of the demineralisation plan, adding 330 liters per second in treatment capacity. A new storage reservoir with a capacity of 2 x 25,000 cubic meters is also planned.
A third phase of pipeline reinforcement work is included as well, covering 10 kilometers of 1,000 mm diameter conduits.
According to ONEE, the projects seek to address rising drinking water needs across Khouribga province and its surrounding areas.
The office described the investments as confirmation of its central role in delivering structural projects that support the region’s economic and sustainable development.
