Rabat – A school activity in Chefchaouen has sparked widespread outrage after an Israeli flag was included as part of a local high school activity.

The event took place on April 24-25 during a regional educational program.

According to a statement from the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of National Education in Chefchaouen, the activity was organized within the framework of implementing national education reform projects aligned with the 2022–2026 roadmap.

The directorate added that such parallel activities, including Model United Nations simulations, are designed to promote quality public schooling, foster student openness, and strengthen life skills and citizenship values. The inclusion of the Israeli flag, however, triggered a division among netizens.

“How could you allow yourselves to commit this disgrace?” one commenter lamented on Facebook. “The high school we once considered exemplary in the region has fallen into this unforgivable mess.”

Morocco re-established relations with Israel in December 2020, a decision that sparked protests among many Moroccans.

Since then, many have been calling on the country to reconsider its decision and cut ties with Israel, especially after its genocidal war on Gaza on October 7, 2023.

In response, Morocco has repeatedly reaffirmed its position in support of the Palestinian case. The North African country consistently reiterated that its decision on re-establishing ties is not changing its firm and steadfast position supporting the independence of the Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The school’s display of the Israeli flag also comes amid an ongoing debate regarding a recent act deemed provocative by many in Morocco.

The case dates back to last week, when a viral video showed a group of the Jewish community performing prayers at a historic wall in Marrakech.

Many, including the Justice and Development Party (PJD), described the act as provocative, urging authorities to react to similar situations.
