Rabat – US Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan III made significant remarks on Thursday, outlining Morocco-US relations, which have reached their highest levels in recent years.

The ambassador made his remarks during the opening of the new consulate compound in Casablanca, which he described as more than just a new building.

The opening of the consulate in Casa Finance City (CFC) was done under a $350 million investment, which contributed up to $100 million to Morocco’s economy during its construction.

The ceremony was attended by US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, Ambassador Duke Buchan III, and Consul General Marissa Scott-Torres, alongside Moroccan officials, including Fouad Ali El Himma and Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

“Combined with the Embassy in Rabat, the United States now has over 500 million dollars invested in Morocco in government buildings with over 1,000 people working for U.S. Mission Morocco,” the ambassador said.

For Buchan III, this is what the real commitment  “looks like. The most of any other country in the Kingdom of Morocco.”

During his speech, the ambassador recalled the US’s steadfast position in support of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We count on Morocco. Morocco counts on us. From Tangier to Dakhla, we stand with Morocco. President Trump is clear in his support for Moroccan sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara,” Buchan III said.

He said the time to resolve the dispute is now, today, “not tomorrow. The window will close. We owe it to all the people of this region. The path to peace is clear. Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal is the only solution.”

The US ambassador’s remarks came as a new blow to Algeria’s regime and the Polisario Front, which have long clung to the outdated referendum claims.

Since the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the UN Security Council in October last year, Morocco has gained momentum with a growing list of countries that back the Autonomy Plan as the only framework and basis to end the dispute.

The resolution recognized Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a genuine political basis and urged Algeria’s regime to engage in the UN-led process to contribute to a political solution able to end the dispute, challenging its narrative of being an observer instead of a main party to the dispute.

For Buchan III, the US is now engaged to ensure the participation of all parties to contribute to a final agreement.

“The United States is leading that change,” he said, adding that those resisting the resolution of this 50-year-old dispute should grasp this moment for inclusive peace and prosperity.

He also reiterated support for the Autonomy Plan, which provides an opportunity as well as investment in the southern province.

Recalling Morocco’s stability, he commended King Mohammed VI’s leadership, which turned the country into a hub for investment, innovation and opportunity.

Duke Buchan concluded his remarks by recalling Morocco’s participation in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and its role as a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

“Morocco prepares to face Brazil on June 13 in this year’s World Cup in New Jersey, let me simply say: we wish the Atlas Lions the very best of luck. I know who I will be rooting for – and it is not Brazil!” he said.
