Agadir – AstraZeneca has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with Morocco’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection, aimed at advancing public health and scientific research in Morocco.
The memorandum was signed on the sidelines of GITEX Future Health Africa 2026, reflecting a shared ambition to accelerate Morocco’s ongoing health system transformation.
“AstraZeneca is proud to announce the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Morocco Ministry of Health, strengthening our long-term commitment to advancing public health and scientific research in the Kingdom,” AstraZeneca announced on Tuesday.
The agreement establishes a framework aligned with Morocco’s national health priorities, focusing on strengthening research and development, improving early detection and screening for chronic diseases, and expanding the use of digital health solutions powered by artificial intelligence.
According to AstraZeneca, the partnership will also support the development of real-world data systems to enhance evidence-based decision-making in the country’s healthcare sector.
Another key pillar of the collaboration is reinforcing continuous training for healthcare professionals, particularly by improving their digital capabilities.
The initiative also includes plans to explore expanding Healthy Heart Africa, a program designed to improve the management of cardiovascular and renal diseases through innovative care models and digitally enabled services.
“Together, we will also work to strengthen the continuous training and digital capabilities of healthcare professionals, while exploring the expansion of ‘Healthy Heart Africa’ initiative to improve the management of cardiovascular and renal diseases through innovative care models and digital-enabled services,” AstraZeneca said.
“This partnership reflects our pride in contributing to Morocco’s health system transformation and our shared ambition to support sustainability, innovation, and equity of access to high-quality, science-led healthcare solutions for patients,” AstraZeneca further explained.
The agreement comes as Morocco positions itself as a growing hub for healthcare innovation.
On Monday, Casablanca hosted the first edition of GITEX Future Health Africa Morocco, bringing together key stakeholders and international healthcare companies to showcase opportunities across Morocco and the wider African market.
The event gathered around 200 brands, including Pfizer, Sanofi, Elekta, and NUMIH, alongside public and private actors from nearly 30 countries. Discussions centered on the theme: “Digitizing Africa’s Healthcare Future: Essential Care Advancing With AI.”
Morocco’s Health Minister Amine Tehraoui described healthcare as a “global and strategic market,” highlighting the simultaneous acceleration of infrastructure, digital industries, and financing across Africa.
Tehraoui emphasized that Africa has the potential to build its own health sovereignty, calling for stronger coordination to develop regional pharmaceutical markets, expand vaccine production, and establish shared epidemiological systems.
