Rabat – FIFA has announced the new regulations for the 2026 following a consultation with continental federations, stressing that the update aims to ensure that the national teams participate with their strongest squads during the world’s largest football event.
The Bureau of the Council has unanimously decided to amend article 10 paragraph 2 of the Regulations for the World Cup which grants a fresh start by wiping away common qualifying penalties.
The decision includes that the players will no longer be suspended for the opening match due to accumulated yellow cards, indirect red cards, or even direct reds involving tactical fouls and hard tackles.
However, any suspensions earned for serious “off-ball” misconduct, such as violent behavior, spitting, or offensive language will still carry over to the final tournament. According to FIFA, the goal is to ensure that while teams can field their strongest lineups despite minor gameplay infractions, players are still held accountable for poor sportsmanship and aggression.
During a meeting held in Vancouver on April 28, the FIFA Council approved additional amendments concerning the 2026 World Cup finals. These stipulate the cancellation of the individual yellow card after the end of the group stage and then again after the quarter finals.
