Rabat – A 44-year-old man and two women died of asphyxiation, according to the city’s health ministry, as mass celebrations erupted in Mexico City following the national team’s victory during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As reported by the local health services, Mexico City’s emergency teams immediately responded to a report of three unconscious people at different locations near Paseo de la Reforma. Clara Brugada Molina, the head of Mexico City’s government, wrote on X.
Despite all medical response protocols being carried out, the patients unfortunately died.
The celebrations followed Mexico’s historic 2-0 win against Ecuador on Tuesday at Azteca Stadium, a result that secured their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
More than a million people flooded the streets of Mexico City, mainly around the Angel of Independence monument.
Mexico had not won a knockout-stage game since beating Bulgaria in the Round of 16 at the 1986 tournament they hosted.
“Bringing joy to the fans is the best thing that can happen to us,” Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said after the win. “Our duty is to give it our all on the field. Our duty is to defend our crest and represent our country with dignity.”
