Nigeria will officially host the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly and the 2026 CAF Awards after President Bola Tinubu approved the organization of both major African football events.

The agreement was confirmed yesterday during an important meeting in Nairobi between Tinubu and CAF president Patrice Motsepe.

The 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly will take place in October 2026 in Abuja, bringing together leaders from CAF’s 54 member associations and senior officials from across African football.

The 2026 CAF Awards ceremony, meanwhile, is scheduled for December 2026 in Lagos. This gala night is African football’s biggest annual awards night, honoring the continent’s best players, coaches, clubs, and national teams.

Nigeria hosting the CAF Awards again after 2017

The 2026 edition will be the first time since 2017 that Nigeria hosts the CAF Awards.

In recent years, Morocco has become the regular home of the ceremony, hosting multiple editions in Rabat and Marrakesh for four consecutive years, starting in 2022 and continuing through 2025.

The return of the event to Nigeria ends a long run of ceremonies held exclusively in Morocco.

Nigeria previously hosted the awards multiple times before in cities such as Abuja and Lagos, in 2008, 2013, 2015, and 2017.

The announcement is being viewed as another sign of Nigeria’s growing influence inside CAF and African football governance.

Many important football figures reportedly attended the Nairobi discussions, including Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Gusau and former NFF president Amaju Pinnick.

Beyond football, both events are also expected to bring major international visibility, tourism, and commercial activity to Nigeria, especially with delegations and media expected from across the continent.
