Rabat – Syria has affirmed its full respect for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
Syrian Foreign Affairs Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani announced his country’s position during his visit to Morocco in Rabat on Thursday.
During the visit, he expressed support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797, representing a turning point in the UN-led political process aimed at reaching a mutually agreed political solution to end the long-standing dispute over Western Sahara.
Al-Shaibani is leading a delegation in what marks the first official visit of a Syrian foreign minister to Morocco, aimed at further strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nassr Bourita received his Syrian counterpart, with both sides expressing commitment to strengthening cooperation across different sectors.
During a press conference, Bourita said the visit comes “within a very particular national context in Syria and a distinct regional Arab context. It is also historic, as it will witness the reopening of Syria’s embassy in Morocco as a sign of the return of relations to their normal course after diplomatic ties were suspended for more than ten years for reasons known to everyone.”
He recalled King Mohammed VI’s clear support for the aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom and dignity.
“It has also consistently supported Syria’s sovereignty and territorial and national unity,” Bourita added.
The Syrian official also commended Morocco’s efforts in supporting the Palestinian cause, including its role in defending the city of Jerusalem and preserving its spiritual and cultural identity, as well as safeguarding its status as a symbol of tolerance and coexistence.
The minister recalled the role of King Mohammed VI, the chairman of the Al Quds Committee, and commended the continued work of the Bayt Mal Al Quds agency in supporting Palestinians and safeguarding the city’s heritage.
