Rabat– In an emotional post-match press interview, star Neymar Jr. confirmed his retirement after Brazil’s 1-2 defeat to Norway on Sunday.
The defeat means Sunday was the last time fans saw Neymar in Brazil’s iconic green and yellow on the pitch.
After the final whistle, Neymar Jr. spoke to the media as he announced his retirement from international football.
“I tried. I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium, and I finished here. It is now over,” the football player said.
The forward was spotted sobbing after the match, with Brazil’s World Cup campaign coming to an unexpected end on a dramatic football night against Norway.
Neymar leaves international football as Brazil‘s all-time leading goalscorer. With 130 international appearances, 80 goals, and 59 assists, he surpassed Pelé’s long-standing scoring record of 77 goals and cemented his place among the greatest players in the country’s football history.
Although he won several major titles with Brazil, including the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016, the FIFA World Cup remains the one major title missing from Neymar’s international career.
The announcement brought down the curtain on one of the most accomplished individual international careers in Brazil’s football history.
