Rabat – Paris Saint-Germain extended their title record to 14 after beating Lens 2-0 on Wednesday to officially wrap up the league race.
PSG entered the match requiring only one point to ensure a fifth successive league crown and now hold a nine-point advantage over second-place Lens.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and substitute Ibrahim Mbaye both found the net at Stade Bollaert-Delelis, securing a 2-0 victory that clinched the championship with a match still to play.
With a French Cup final against Nice scheduled for May 22, Lens manager Pierre Sage opted to keep his most clinical attackers, Florian Thauvin and Allan Saint-Maximin, on the bench, only introducing them after the hour mark.
“This is the sweetest and hardest title to win, the hardest of the three years we’ve had here, without a doubt,” PSG manager Luis Enrique said after the game.
“Without a doubt this was difficult, Lens did so well this season… I think they deserved more tonight but Safonov was incredible tonight,” he added.
The French league moved the fixture from its original April 11 date to better accommodate PSG’s pursuit of the European title. This rescheduling was intended to provide the defending champions with an optimized preparation window for the Champions League.
PSG’s focus now shifts to the Premier League leader Arsenal, their opponents in the Champions League final. The two sides will meet in Budapest on May 30 to decide the continental title.
The Parisian club currently holds the record for the most Ligue 1 titles in history, surpassing Saint-Étienne, who sit in second place with 10 championships.
