Rabat – The death toll of the devastating collapse of a residential building in Fez has risen to 15 people.
Moroccan news outlet Le360 quoted an informed medical source, who said civil protection teams recovered 13 bodies from the rubble, while two other victims died from their injuries shortly after being admitted to the emergency department of the Hassan II University Hospital.
The four-story residential building collapsed on Thursday morning. It collapsed overnight in a densely populated neighborhood, while several others sustained injuries of varying severity.
Le360 suggests that the new death toll is not the final assessment.
Five injured individuals are in stable condition, the same source added, stating that one of the wounded victims did not reside in the building but was nearby at the time of the tragedy.
Civil protection teams ended the search and clearing operations under the rubble after confirming that no other victims remained.
The National Council for Human Rights (CNHD) called for a judicial investigation and a comprehensive national strategy to address recurring building collapses.
The CNDH said it deployed a team from its Fez-Meknes regional commission to monitor the aftermath and conduct an on-site investigation. The council warned that the “recurrence of residential building collapses constitutes a direct violation of the right to adequate housing as defined by international standards.”
In December last year, CNDH also demanded urgent action on a similar crisis, following the collapse of two residential buildings in Fez that killed 22 people and injured 16 others.
The Council expressed “deep concern” over the previous tragedy, declaring that adequate housing is a fundamental human right guaranteed by the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
