Rabat – The Moroccan banking association has announced that Friday, May 29, will be an exceptional holiday for all banks across the country on the occasion of Eid Al Adha.
The group said in a statement that all banking institutions will close for the day, while ensuring that essential services remain available. Banks will continue to operate digital services normally, and ATMs will be regularly supplied and kept in good working condition to avoid disruptions for customers.
The government also announced an additional day off for public sector employees on Friday. This decision is not unusual in Morocco, as authorities often grant extra days off when Eid falls close to the weekend to allow people more time to celebrate, travel, and spend time with their families.
Moroccans will observe Eid Al Adha on Wednesday, with Thursday already declared a public holiday as part of the religious celebration. The extra day on Friday effectively extends the holiday period for many people across the country.
Eid Al Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is one of the most important religious holidays in Islam. It marks the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, before God provided a ram to be sacrificed instead.
Muslim families around the world usually perform the ritual sacrifice of a sheep, goat, or cow during the holiday, and share the meat with relatives, neighbors, and people in need. It is a time of prayer, charity, family gatherings, and celebration.
