Rabat – The Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed rail line (LGV) has moved past 30% completion, Morocco’s Minister of Transport and Logistics Abdessamad Kayouh told parliament on Monday.
He gave the update before the House of Representatives during a session devoted to rail transport development. The minister confirmed that the project remains on track for delivery in September 2029.
The planned 430-kilometer line will connect Rabat and Marrakech and will reduce travel time by more than two hours compared with current rail journeys.
The project stands among Morocco’s largest transport infrastructure schemes and forms part of a wider effort to expand the national high-speed rail network.
Kayouh also confirmed that feasibility studies for a future extension to Agadir have now been completed. The proposed line carries an estimated cost of MAD 55 billion ($5.9 billion).
The route crosses the High Atlas region, where complex terrain shapes the design of the project. About 70% of the planned works consist of bridges and tunnels due to the mountainous landscape.
Financing discussions continue, with Morocco expected to rely on international funding partners. The timing of the extension depends on the availability of external financial support.
