Rabat – Jose Mourinho has agreed terms to become the next head coach of Real Madrid, completing a dramatic return to the Bernabeu more than a decade after his first spell.

The 63‑year‑old signed a contract last week that runs until June 2029. His appointment is backed by club president Florentino Perez, who triggered elections on May 12.

The vote will be held on June 7, with Mourinho expected to be formally announced once Perez secures another term.

Perez faces a challenge from businessman Enrique Riquelme, who has said Mourinho would not be his choice.

But preparations for Mourinho’s backroom staff and summer recruitment are already underway, reflecting Perez’s confidence in the decision.

Mourinho had been offered an extension at Benfica, but delayed his choice until their final league game on May 16.

Sources close to the club confirmed he had already indicated his departure. Benfica are now searching for a replacement, with Marco Silva among the leading candidates.

Madrid’s move for Mourinho was first reported earlier this month, with Perez personally driving the process.

Other names considered included Mauricio Pochettino, Massimiliano Allegri, Didier Deschamps, and Jurgen Klopp, but Mourinho was Perez’s preferred option.

Mourinho previously managed Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning three domestic trophies, including the 2011‑12 La Liga title with a record points total.

His return comes at a difficult moment for the club, which has gone two straight seasons without a major trophy.

Xabi Alonso was dismissed in January, and Alvaro Arbeloa finished the season as interim coach.

The decision to bring Mourinho back has divided opinion. His first spell ended amid tension with senior players and controversy in the media.

More recently, his comments during a Champions League tie between Madrid and Benfica reignited criticism, especially regarding Vinicius Junior.

Perez, however, believes Mourinho’s personality and experience can restore belief inside the club.

Analysts suggest his arrival may provide a short‑term boost, with players responding to his authority and fans rallying behind his combative style. But there are also warnings that the cycle of conflict that marked his first tenure could return.
