Agadir – Morocco’s Minister of Health, Amine Tehraoui, announced on Monday that the country’s public healthcare system is set to receive 530 newly graduated specialist doctors, who will be assigned to public hospitals across the country starting in the upcoming months.
The measure seeks to address longstanding staffing shortages in public healthcare facilities while tackling the employment issues that have often left newly trained specialists waiting up to two years before beginning their professional assignments.
“A total of 531 positions were filled in emergency departments during the previous four months. Of these, 51 positions were filled through recruitment competitions, while the remaining positions were covered through staff redeployment,” Tehraoui announced.
The ministry has also shared that it is investing in upgrading hospital infrastructure. Tehraoui noted that MAD 177 million ($17.7 million) was allocated over the past four months to improve emergency departments, including MAD 150 million ($15 million) dedicated to rehabilitation works, renovations, and the acquisition of medical equipment.
“A financial allocation of MAD 177 million was dedicated to upgrading emergency departments over the past four months. This included MAD 150 million for rehabilitation and renovation works and for the acquisition of medical equipment,” Tehraoui added.
In parallel, more than 900 healthcare professionals have been assigned to hospital institutions to improve the organization and standardization of patient reception services. Authorities have also recruited 70 medical-social assistants to strengthen staffing levels and support patient care operations.
The minister added that reforms have extended beyond staffing and infrastructure. The ministry has revised specifications and operational frameworks governing hospital reception services while gradually rolling out new management systems across healthcare facilities.
Tehraoui concluded by saying that 32 hospital centers have established reception management units and updated patient referral systems. Another 80 hospitals are launching tender procedures, while 70 healthcare institutions are finalizing and reviewing their technical specifications as part of the nationwide modernization effort.
