Agadir – Morocco’s Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, chaired on Monday in Laayoune, the first Board of Directors meeting of the Territorial Health Group (GST) of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region.
The launch of this fourth Territorial Health Group at the national level is part of ongoing structural reform aimed at reorganizing and modernizing the national health system through integrated regional governance.
According to Akhannouch, the initiative carries particular significance as part of ongoing efforts to promote and advance the development of Morocco’s southern provinces.
“The activation of the territorial health group in the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region carries special significance, given the supreme attention to the country’s southern provinces,” he further explained.
“The launch will contribute to bringing healthcare services closer and providing consistent services that align with the needs of citizens and the specificities of the region’s provinces,” Akhannouch added.
The Head of Government said that this new model aims to reorganize healthcare services and strengthen coordination between different health structures, from primary healthcare centers to university hospital infrastructures within each region.
The meeting was also an opportunity to discuss the strategic role of the new University Hospital Centre (CHU) in Laayoune, currently in its final stages of completion and set to provide a capacity of 500 beds.
The facility is expected to enhance the regional healthcare offer, reduce waiting times, and support the training of medical students under the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, in line with the New Development Model for Morocco’s southern provinces.
The Territorial Health Group model is part of a broader reform strategy aimed at improving accessibility, efficiency, and quality of healthcare services across Morocco’s regions, based on the specific needs of each territorial area.
