Moroccan international Sofyan Amrabat's proposed move to Real Betis has hit another obstacle after Turkish club Fenerbahce maintained its €15 million asking price

Morocco’s football player Sofyan Amrabat will not remain at Real Betis beyond the 2025-2026 season. The Moroccan midfielder is set to return to Fenerbahçe after the Spanish club decided not to make his loan move permanent.

According to reports from Fichajes, Betis have ruled out a permanent deal for the 29-year-old Atlas Lion despite qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Flop campaign

The Andalusian club reportedly concluded that the financial investment required to sign Amrabat did not match the expected sporting return. Betis officials were unconvinced by both the transfer conditions proposed by Fenerbahçe and the player’s overall performances during the campaign.

Amrabat featured in 29 matches for Betis during the 2025-2026 season. While his experience, defensive qualities, and physical presence were appreciated, his performances were considered inconsistent. The coaching staff, led by Manuel Pellegrini, reportedly had concerns about his ability to deliver at the expected level consistently.

Financial considerations also played a key role in the decision. Reports indicate that a permanent transfer would have cost Betis around €12 million, while the Moroccan international’s salary package would have exceeded €4 million per year. The club ultimately decided that the operation was too expensive and chose to prioritize other transfer targets.

As a result, Amrabat will return to Fenerbahçe, where he remains under contract until June 2028. The Turkish club is now expected to hold discussions with the player regarding the next step in his career.

Despite the setback in Spain, Amrabat continues to attract interest across Europe thanks to his experience at the highest level and his strong performances with the Moroccan national team in recent years. Amrabat is part of Morocco’s 2026 World Cup squad.
