Fez – Work is progressing rapidly on what will become Morocco’s longest bridge, located in the city of Laâyoune.
According to the Ministry of Equipment and Water, construction of the viaduct over Oued Sakia El Hamra has reached 43% completion since work began in July 2024.
The bridge will stretch 1,650 meters in length and 21 meters in width, with pylons rising 46 meters high.
The project represents an investment of nearly 1.3 billion dirhams and is expected to be completed in 2027.
Once operational, the bridge will ease traffic congestion on Laâyoune’s ring road and improve road safety while enhancing the city’s economic appeal.
Authorities expect the project to facilitate investment and support the region’s ongoing development.
The viaduct has been designed to meet advanced environmental and seismic standards.
M’barak Fancha, head of the project’s temporary central management unit, previously told local media that the construction incorporates modern engineering solutions aimed at ensuring the structure can withstand earthquakes, floods, and other natural hazards.
The bridge also includes a modern rainwater drainage system with dedicated water evacuation openings.
The design draws inspiration from the existing bridge at the northern entrance of Laâyoune, which proved effective during recent heavy rains by allowing traffic to continue safely.
Construction is taking place around the clock. More than 600 workers, engineers, and technicians are currently involved in the project.
Night operations are supported by electric generators, while strict safety measures have been put in place, including the permanent presence of a medical team and an ambulance on site.
Hedi Mohamed Yahdih, president of the Association of Driving Education Professionals of Sakia El Hamra, said the project is expected to significantly improve traffic conditions in Laâyoune at a time when the number of vehicles in the city continues to rise.
The bridge is also being built near a growing industrial and economic zone, a location that is expected to facilitate access to services for road users and further strengthen the region’s economic activity.
As construction advances, the viaduct is gradually emerging as one of Morocco’s most ambitious infrastructure projects and a new landmark for Laâyoune.
