Fez – The United States and Iran launched a new round of high-level talks in Switzerland on Sunday, with Lebanon dominating the agenda as both sides seek to preserve their recently reached agreement.
US Vice President JD Vance is leading the American delegation, while Iran’s team is headed by senior negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Pakistan and Qatar are taking part as mediators in the discussions held at the Bürgenstock resort near Lucerne.
Ahead of the meeting, Iran warned that the agreement could not be implemented unless the fighting in Lebanon comes to an end.
The talks come at a delicate moment. Although the US and Iran recently reached a framework agreement aimed at ending months of tensions, the ongoing crisis in Lebanon has raised doubts about whether the deal can survive.
Tehran accused Israel of violating the ceasefire and said Washington had failed to fully uphold its commitments.
The talks are also taking place amid tensions over the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran claims it has closed the strategic waterway in response to what it describes as violations of the agreement, while the US military says commercial traffic continues to move through the area.
For Washington, the talks are focused on three priorities: establishing a roadmap for future negotiations, making progress on Iran’s nuclear program and securing a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon.
Despite the disagreements, officials from the two countries have signaled their willingness to continue negotiations.
Analysts say Washington and Tehran share an interest in preventing a wider regional escalation and keeping diplomatic channels open.
