RABAT — Portugal’s national team has found itself at the center of attention following a growing online controversy. After a disappointing result — a draw against DR Congo in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup- fans initially focused on the disappointing result itself.
But the conversation quickly shifted to a series of statements, viral clips, and social media reactions that sparked controversy over the team’s spirit and what many describe as “ignorance” shown toward Cristiano Ronaldo.
The backlash intensified after comments made by João Neves during a post-match media interaction quickly circulated online. When asked about balancing a squad full of stars, the midfielder praised Cristiano Ronaldo’s legacy and contribution to Portuguese football, but stated that at this stage of his career he is “one of us” and “no different to the rest of the team,” adding that he would contribute like any other player.
The remarks were interpreted by some of the Portugal fans and Cristiano Ronaldo supporters as controversial, and as downplaying Ronaldo’s importance to the national team, creating a heated debate across social media and intensifying discussions around the football star’s role within the squad.
João Neves was also the target of cyberbullying afterwards by some fans and received millions of hate comments on his latest Instagram posts alongside his girlfriend and some of his family members as well.
Some comments read:“Pass the ball to Cristiano.”
Captain Bruno Fernandes’ Instagram account was also flooded with comments criticizing him and asking him to show more respect towards the Portugal team’s striker, Ronaldo.
Adding to the speculation, another clip went viral from a Portugal squad training session showing João Cancelo and Ronaldo in an interaction that some fans interpreted as a sign of tension and ignorance.
While there is no evidence of any internal conflict within the Portuguese camp, and no official statement from any of the players saying that there is a dispute within the squad, the fan criticism and social media narratives remain just rumors and fan theories.
As Portugal prepares for its next World Cup match, attention will not only be focused on results on the pitch, but also on whether the team can silence the growing noise surrounding one of football’s most-watched squads and players.
