Rabat – Sonia Mezzour has been elected president of the Moroccan Exporters Confederation (ASMEX) following the organization’s general assembly held earlier this week in Casablanca.
Mezzour succeeds Hassan Sentissi El Idrissi, who led the confederation since 2013, marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of Morocco’s leading organizations supporting exporters.
According to ASMEX, her election comes at a time of major changes in global trade, as Moroccan companies face increasing pressure to improve their competitiveness, diversify export markets, and adapt to new economic, regulatory, and environmental requirements.
A former vice president of ASMEX and head of its Financing, Insurance, and Economic Intelligence Commission, Mezzour has advocated for practical support for businesses. Her priorities include improving access to financing, strengthening risk management tools, expanding economic intelligence, and providing solutions tailored to the needs of Moroccan exporters.
A proven track record
Mezzour brings extensive experience from both the public and private sectors. She is a former senior Moroccan public official in the energy sector, serving as an adviser to the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development. She has also served as vice chair of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Public-Private Partnership Working Party.
She is also the managing partner of Oversee, where she develops renewable energy and infrastructure projects across Africa and Southeast Asia. Her work includes the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of solar, wind, and waste-to-energy plants, as well as water treatment and desalination projects.
Known for her expertise in infrastructure financing and renewable energy, Mezzour has led a portfolio of public-private partnership projects and helped African companies secure international project financing. She was appointed ImPPPact Ambassador for Public-Private Partnerships in 2020 and has received several international distinctions throughout her career.
Mezzour also serves as an independent director and member of the Audit and Strategic Committees at Ciments du Maroc, where she contributes to corporate governance, financial oversight, strategic planning, and the company’s decarbonization and ESG goals.
Mezzour holds a master’s degree in Mechanical and Process Engineering from the prestigious Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich). She also completed a master’s thesis at Harvard Medical School and attended the Senior Business Executive Program at Harvard Business School.
Fluent in Arabic, English, French, German, and Spanish, Mezzour is a frequent speaker at international conferences and is widely recognized for her work in sustainable development and strategic investment.
ASMEX said her appointment reflects a vision focused on strengthening the organization’s role as a platform that is more effective, more responsive, and closer to Moroccan businesses operating in international markets.
Under her leadership, the confederation aims to unite stakeholders around a common roadmap to support Morocco’s exporters and strengthen the country’s economic presence on the global stage.
