Rabat – Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi has cemented his name in football history by becoming the most-capped African player in World Cup history, reaching a record-breaking 13 appearances.
The 27-year-old achieved the historic feat during Morocco’s 4-2 victory over Haiti on Wednesday, surpassing Cameroon legend François Omam-Biyik and Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan. The two veterans previously shared the African record with 11 World Cup appearances each.
The Moroccan star’s 13 appearances are divided across three consecutive World Cups, starting with three matches in Russia 2018, followed by seven in Qatar 2022, and three so far in the ongoing 2026 tournament, allowing him to stand alone at the top of Africa’s all-time World Cup appearance list.
Following the match against Scotland, CAF celebrated the achievement on X, posting: “A new African benchmark. Achraf Hakimi now holds the record for the most #FIFAWorldCup appearances by an African player.”
The tribute reflected the weight of the milestone, spotlighting Hakimi’s remarkable consistency and enduring influence for the Atlas Lions on the world stage.
This record follows an incredible year for Hakimi, who took home the African Player of the Year award after anchoring Paris Saint-Germain’s historic sextuple campaign. With PSG, he won all six available titles, including Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and the UEFA Champions League.
Now holding 19 career trophies, Hakimi officially ranks as the most decorated African player in football history, surpassing the trophy hauls of continental legends Samuel Eto’o and Yaya Touré.
