Rabat – Lionel Messi made history on Saturday by becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches.
The Argentine star found the net against Jordan, breaking a long-standing record he previously shared with football legends Just Fontaine and Jairzinho.
Coming off the bench, Messi sealed Argentina’s 3–1 win in the 80th minute by curling a brilliant 25-meter free kick past the wall and into the net, a strike that wrapped up the win and secured his place in the tournament’s history books.
The 39-year-old’s historic scoring streak began at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, starting with a goal against Australia in the round of 16. He went on to score in the next two knockout rounds against the Netherlands and Croatia, before netting twice in the dramatic final against France to help Argentina lift the trophy.
The Argentina leader continued that momentum into the 2026 World Cup, scoring a hat-trick against Algeria in the opening match and adding two more goals against Austria in the second game. His recent strike against Jordan brought his tournament total to six goals and extended his all-time World Cup record to 19 goals.
With the group stage now complete, Argentina advances to the knockout rounds as the top seed from Group J. The reigning champions will look to carry this momentum into the round of 16 as they continue their title defense.
