Rabat – Algeria and Austria have come under intense scrutiny following their dramatic 3-3 draw in the final round of Group J matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a result that secured qualification for both sides while eliminating Iran.
The match immediately sparked comparisons to the infamous “Disgrace of Gijón” at the 1982 World Cup, when West Germany and Austria played out a mutually beneficial result that knocked Algeria out of the tournament.
Heading into Sunday’s clash in Kansas City, the scenario was simple: a draw would send both Algeria and Austria through to the round of 32 regardless of Iran’s result against Egypt.
What followed only fueled suspicions online.
Austria opened the scoring through Marko Arnautović before Algeria equalized via Rafik Belghali. Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s lead in the second half, only for Riyad Mahrez to level the score once again minutes later.
The controversy intensified late on.
Mahrez appeared to score a dramatic 93rd-minute winner that would have eliminated Austria and sent Iran through. Footage then showed visible frustration on the Austria bench, with staff members reacting angrily toward the Algerian side moments after the goal.
But deep into the stoppage time, Saša Kalajdžić headed home a 96th-minute equalizer to restore the result both teams needed.
Clips circulating online have since highlighted stretches of the match when both sides appeared reluctant to attack aggressively while the score stood at 2-2. Iranian supporters flooded social media, demanding an investigation and accusing both teams of manipulating the result.
Mahrez’s own post-match comments only added fuel to the speculation online.
Speaking in what many fans described as an unusually apologetic tone, the Algeria captain said: “You know it’s an awkward situation… but the ball came to me, what do I do? I have to shoot and respect football.”
The reaction quickly sparked debate across social media, with some supporters questioning why a player would sound apologetic after scoring a potentially decisive goal for his own team in a World Cup match.
Many Iranian fans and neutral supporters flooded social media with accusations of collusion following the chaotic finish in Kansas City.
One user wrote: “Both of them should be eliminated. What a disgrace, the last 20 minutes, what a disaster.”
Another viral post questioned the late sequence of events, writing: “Algeria scored in the last minute of extra time. Austria’s bench clashed with Algeria’s in disbelief. Why would they do that? Then FIFA found three additional extra minutes. Austria equalized. Whistle blew. Iran out. Scripted. Investigation required.”
Both managers strongly rejected the accusations.
Austria coach Ralf Rangnick dismissed conspiracy theories as “mad,” insisting the chaotic ending proved there had been no agreement between the two sides.
“In this match, when you have a 3-3, nobody can assume that it was an agreement, especially after what we saw during the last 90 seconds,” Rangnick said.
“If Alfred Hitchcock had written such a drama, I probably would have said he was completely mad.”
Algeria manager Vladimir Petković also denied any arrangement, stating that “football won” in the end.
Austria now advances to face Spain in the Round of 32, while Algeria will meet Switzerland.
