Rabat – Nobody in the Brazil camp will say it out loud, but Japan is exactly the kind of opponent you don’t want to face in a knockout round.
Not because they’re technically superior. Not because they carry more firepower going forward. But because they are a genuine nightmare to break down, and the moment you lose concentration, even briefly, they make you pay.Â
Ask Germany. Ask Spain. Both packed their bags early after running into a Japanese side that defends with everything it has and transitions forward like a coiled spring finally released. And these wins weren’t flukes. Instead, they were a statement of intent.
Brazil will have the ball. Probably a lot of it. Vinicius Jr. will be causing chaos down the left, Rayan drifting inside looking for half-spaces, and Paquetá trying to control the tempo from midfield. On paper, that attacking unit is enough to frighten any defense in the world.
But Japan’s defense isn’t just any defense.
They sit in a low block that is genuinely suffocating to play against. They cut off every passing lane, crowd every central channel. Which means Brazil will need patience. The worst thing they could do is grow frustrated, push bodies forward, and leave space behind for Japan to hit on the counter.
And Japan absolutely will exploit it. Junya Ito is the player to watch; give him room on the left and he becomes one of the most dangerous wingers at this tournament. Ueda, for his part, doesn’t need many chances. One run, one mistake from a Brazilian center-back, and suddenly it’s a completely different game.
History favors Brazil, though. Selecao fans surely have in mind the 4-1 in 2006, or the 3-0 at the 2013 Confederations Cup. But this Japanese generation has beaten world champions on the biggest stages and walked away like it was expected. That mentality is hard to prepare for.
Brazil should win. But if Japan nick a goal early, if Vinicius has a quiet night, if Brazil starts rushing, this gets very interesting and very fast.
Japan will back themselves in that scenario. They always do.
