Rabat – Morocco have secured at least $31.5 million from FIFA after reaching the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup.
The Atlas Lions booked their place in the last eight after defeating Canada 3-0 on Saturday at Houston Stadium.
Azzedine Ounahi scored twice in the second half before Soufiane Rahimi added Morocco’s third goal late in the match.
The result sent Morocco to the World Cup quarterfinals for the second consecutive tournament.
FIFA prize money reaches record level
FIFA approved a record financial distribution for the 2026 World Cup, with the total amount for participating teams rising to $871 million.
Under FIFA’s payout system, teams finishing between fifth and eighth place receive $19 million in performance prize money.
Morocco have now guaranteed that amount by reaching the quarterfinals.
The figure does not include FIFA’s fixed payments for participation.
FIFA also gives each qualified team $10 million in qualification money and $2.5 million to cover preparation costs.
That brings Morocco’s guaranteed total so far to $31.5 million.
Morocco can still earn more
Morocco can increase the amount if they continue their World Cup run.
A fourth-place finish would bring $27 million in performance money, while the third-placed team receives $29 million.
The runner-up earns $33 million, while the World Cup champion receives $50 million in performance prize money.
After adding FIFA’s $12.5 million in qualification and preparation money, the total would rise to $39.5 million for fourth place, $41.5 million for third place, $45.5 million for the runner-up and $62.5 million for the champion.
France await in quarterfinals
Morocco will now face France in the quarterfinals.
France reached the last eight after beating Paraguay 1-0, with Kylian Mbappe scoring the only goal from the penalty spot.
The match will be another major test for Mohamed Ouahbi’s team, who have already eliminated the Netherlands and Canada in the knockout stage.
Morocco’s latest run adds to the team’s historic 2022 campaign, when the Atlas Lions became the first African and Arab team to reach a World Cup semifinal.
