Casablanca – Uruguay has decided to hand the reins of its national team to Diego Forlan, converging reports have indicated. The president of the Uruguayan Football Federation, Ignacio Alonso, said on Sunday that Forlan had expressed “enthusiasm” at the possibility of taking charge of La Celeste, specifying that a deal could be finalized in the coming hours.
Meanwhile, Diego Forlan would also oversee the Uruguay U20 side for the continental tournament in that category organized in January 2027.
Uruguay’s third all-time leading scorer (36 goals in 112 matches), Forlan was named Best Player of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he guided Uruguay to the semi-finals. He also lifted the Copa America trophy in 2011, the nation’s most recent major international trophy.
In his home country, Diego Forlan is a true living legend. As a player, he made no fewer than 112 appearances and scored 36 goals for the Uruguayan national team between 2002 and 2014. During his career, the former striker featured for major clubs such as Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, and Inter Milan.
