Rabat – Morocco’s inspiring run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end on Thursday after a quarterfinal defeat to France at Gillette Stadium in Boston. Despite the disappointment, the Atlas Lions leave the tournament with a significant financial reward.
By reaching the quarterfinals, Morocco secured a FIFA prize of approximately 190 million Moroccan dirhams (19 billion centimes). The bonus was earned after the Atlas Lions defeated Canada in the Round of 16 to book their place among the tournament’s final eight.
The quarterfinal loss also meant Morocco missed the opportunity to claim an additional 270 million dirhams (27 billion centimes), the amount awarded to teams advancing to the semifinals.
Under FIFA’s prize money structure for the 2026 World Cup, the third-place team will receive 290 million dirhams (29 billion centimes), the runners-up 330 million dirhams (33 billion centimes), while the tournament winners will collect 500 million dirhams (50 billion centimes).
Although their World Cup journey ended before the semifinals, Morocco’s campaign was another milestone for the national team. Beyond the sporting success, the financial reward is expected to support the Royal Moroccan Football Federation’s efforts to further develop football in the country, reflecting the Atlas Lions’ growing stature on the international stage.
