Rabat – Jurgen Klopp is reportedly close to becoming Germany’s new national team coach after reaching an agreement in principle with the German Football Association.
Sky Germany reported that Klopp is expected to sign a contract running until the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
The final talks between Klopp, his agent Marc Kosicke, DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and Hans-Joachim Watzke were planned in New York, with reports saying only final details remain before the appointment can be officially completed.
The DFB has not yet formally announced the appointment.
Germany move after Nagelsmann exit
Klopp is expected to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany’s disappointing World Cup exit.
Germany were eliminated by Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32, a result that pushed the DFB to move quickly toward a major change.
According to reports, the DFB identified Klopp as its preferred candidate after Nagelsmann’s departure.
Klopp had confirmed that talks were taking place and said he felt ready to return to coaching after time away from the touchline.
One of the remaining details concerns Klopp’s current role as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer.
Bulinews, citing Sky Germany, reported that Klopp’s departure from Red Bull is considered a formality and will be finalized once his agreement with the DFB is completed.
Klopp took that Red Bull role in January 2025 after leaving Liverpool.
His return to coaching would mark one of the biggest managerial moves in international football.
A long-term Germany project
The reported deal would give Klopp a full four-year cycle with Germany.
He would lead the national team at Euro 2028 before preparing them for the 2030 World Cup.
That tournament will carry extra weight for Morocco, Spain and Portugal as co-hosts.
For Germany, it would be the first long-term rebuild under one of the country’s most successful modern coaches.
Klopp built his reputation at Borussia Dortmund, where he won Bundesliga titles, before becoming a Liverpool legend by winning the Premier League and Champions League.
Klopp’s possible appointment comes at a difficult moment for German football.
Germany have struggled to restore the consistency and authority that once made them one of the strongest national teams in the world.
The early World Cup exit increased pressure on the DFB and made the next appointment especially important.
Reports in Germany suggest Klopp may also receive significant influence over sporting structures inside the federation, not only the senior team.
That would make his role more than a normal coaching job.
For now, the agreement still needs official confirmation.
But if completed, Klopp will be tasked with leading Germany into a new era, with the 2030 World Cup as the main target.
