Rabat – Spanish media have renewed their concerns and allegations, stirring a fuss over the possibility of Morocco hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup final.
These allegations come despite no official decision on the venue, although several reports suggest Morocco could be favored to stage the tournament final. The claims have reignited fresh debate, with some alleging that political alliances may influence FIFA’s decision.
The reports further politicize a process that remains officially undecided.
The latest claims came from The Objective, which claimed that Morocco “secured enough support within the FIFA Council to determine who will host the 2030 World Cup final.”
“It has 22 of the 37 votes under control. It has secured the backing of the African, Asian, North American, and Oceanian confederations thanks to the influence of Donald Trump’s administration, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.”
Spanish reports also conveyed claims by the Spanish radio program El Larguero on Cadena SER, which said that “the impression we got after being there is that Morocco’s lobbying effort has been underway for years and that, for them, this is a matter of state.”
Such claims form part of a narrative promoted by some Spanish media outlets that cast Morocco in a negative light and risk politicizing sports, even as Morocco’s Royal Football Federation (FRMF) continues to emphasize that any decision remains premature and officially undecided.
Recently, Moroccan author and analyst Samir Bennis issued a warning about narratives promoted by some Spanish media outlets that portray Morocco negatively amid ongoing FIFA and US-related controversies.
This comes particularly in the wake of debate over Trump’s alleged intervention in FIFA’s decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban ahead of the US-Belgium game.
Bennis argued that the Spanish media is always on the lookout for any information it can use to point fingers at Morocco.
“To do so, they found no better argument than to suggest that Trump was pressuring Infantino to award Morocco the right to host the 2030 World Cup final, which will be organized jointly by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal,” the analyst stated.
He also stressed that the Spanish media is using a similar narrative, adding that this is not an isolated incident, as the campaign has historically been quick and eager to portray Morocco in a negative light.
In December 2024, FIFA officially confirmed Morocco as a co-host of the Yalla Vamos 2030 World Cup, alongside Portugal and Spain.
The three countries emphasized the importance of the tournament, which will also contribute to the socio-economic development of the host nations by attracting investment and boosting tourism.
