Agadir – Morocco has won a silver medal and an honorable mention at the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), marking a major achievement during the country’s second participation in one of the world’s most prestigious physics competitions for high school students.
Held in Bucaramanga, Colombia, from July 4-12, the 2026 edition of the Olympiad brought together some of the world’s brightest young physics talents to compete in advanced theoretical and experimental challenges.
The Moroccan delegation, selected by the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports, consisted of five students: Ikram Amazzal, Hafsa Boukhajjou, Jad El Mouden, Adam Mirhiss, and Said Telhmerit.
According to Morocco’s Ambassador to Colombia, Farida Loudaya, student Said Telhmerit earned the silver medal, while Hafsa Boukhajjou received a certificate of appreciation, equivalent to an honorable mention.
In a statement following the closing ceremony, Loudaya said the Moroccan delegation “shone in the country’s second participation in this prestigious international scientific event,” describing the results as “a proud achievement that embodies the excellence of Moroccan youth and their ability to raise the country’s flag high on the international stage.”
The Moroccan Embassy in Bogotá participated in the closing ceremony of the Olympiad, which concluded on July 12 after more than a week of competition.
The International Physics Olympiad is regarded as one of the most prestigious global science competitions for secondary school students. Participants are tested through demanding theoretical and laboratory examinations designed to assess their knowledge, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills in physics.
Morocco’s latest success is added to a list of growing international recognition of the country’s young scientific talent.
In June, Moroccan students from STM School in Fez participated in Exposciences Occitanie 2026 and MOBISCIENCES 2026, an Erasmus+ funded international science mobility program held at the University of Toulouse in France.
