Rabat – Head coach Lionel Scaloni hinted at Argentina’s exit after last night’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat against Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
La Aleceleste manager expressed his gratitude for the time he spent as Argentina’s head coach, confirming that he needs time to figure things out after the painful loss against Spain.
“I am grateful for being here; it is everyone’s dream. We have tried until the last minute with the staff and the players. I think it’s only fair that I can have this time for myself to think this through.” Scaloni said at a post-match press conference.
When asked about his position, Scaloni said, “I don’t know what I would like to do. I will see out my contract, and I don’t know if something as big can be done. I need to talk to the president”
Scaloni believes that a team like this is not easy to build with superstars like Lionel Messi, who happened to play his last World Cup.
“We never imagined we would be in a position like this,” Scaloni said. “So, to continue, a lot of things are required. Building a group like this is hard to replicate,” he added.
In a heartbreaking moment, Scaloni left the news conference unable to fight back tears: “It hurts my soul. I am so sorry.” Scaloni ended the press conference, leaving the world in doubt over his future with La Albiceleste.
Scaloni’s journey with Argentina started in 2017 when he was the assistant manager of the national team. Then he became the official manager of Argentina U20 before signing a contract with the Argentina first team in 2018.
He is regarded as one of the best national coaches in the world. Known for his hard work and deep understanding of the game, he played as a right back and a midfielder, mainly at Deportivo de La Coruña.
