Casablanca – The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is not expected to deliver a verdict in the dispute between Morocco and Senegal over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title before October, according to a report by Spanish sports law publication Iusport.
The Lausanne-based court had initially been expected to deliver its verdict this month. However, Iusport, citing sources close to one of the parties involved, reported that a hearing is now expected to take place in September or October, making a July decision impossible.
The decision comes after CAF’s verdict on March 17 to strip Senegal of the AFCON title and award it to Morocco following the controversial final, during which Senegal walked off the pitch, effectively forfeiting the match.
According to CAF, Senegal violated competition regulations after its players left the pitch during extra time in protest over a penalty awarded to Morocco.
Although Morocco failed to convert the penalty and later conceded a goal, CAF ruled that Senegal’s actions constituted an abandonment of the match, recording a 3-0 administrative victory in favor of Morocco and awarding the Atlas Lions the continental title.
Senegal strongly rejected the decision, describing it as “the most blatant administrative robbery,” and subsequently appealed the ruling before CAS.
According to Iusport, once the hearing takes place, the panel will begin its deliberations, a process expected to take several weeks before a final verdict is issued.
Neither CAS nor CAF has officially announced the hearing date or confirmed when a final ruling will be delivered.
Until then, the question of who will officially be recognized as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations champion remains unresolved, with the continent’s highest football title still subject to a pending legal decision.
