Report: Trump Wants FIFA President Gianni Infantino as Next UN Chief

A new report claims the U.S. President Donald Trump is backing FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, a move that could reshape both international diplomacy and global football.

Casablanca – U.S. President Donald Trump wants FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, according to a report published by the New York Post.

Citing sources close to the U.S. president, the newspaper said Trump believes Infantino has earned international respect and possesses a unique ability to bring people together, particularly after their close cooperation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The report says the position will become vacant at the end of the year when current UN Secretary-General António Guterres steps down. Any candidate would first need the backing of the 15-member UN Security Council before being confirmed by the UN General Assembly.

The report notes that it remains unclear whether Infantino is interested in pursuing the position or whether Trump has personally discussed the proposal with him.

However, the newspaper says Trump believes the current field of candidates presents an opportunity, with one source describing the race as lacking a standout contender.

Among the names reportedly under consideration are former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet and International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi.

The New York Post also quoted Paolo Zampolli, Trump’s Special Envoy for Global Partnerships, who argued that Infantino’s experience leading FIFA makes him well suited for the position.

“At the United Nations, you have to deal with 193 member states. In FIFA, there are over 200 members,” Zampolli told the newspaper.

The report comes as Infantino has already declared his intention to seek another term as FIFA president in elections scheduled for next March.

If appointed to the UN role, Infantino would leave football’s governing body after nearly a decade in charge and take on one of the most influential diplomatic positions in the world.

Neither FIFA nor Infantino had commented on the report at the time of publication. According to the New York Post, Infantino did not respond to the outlet’s request for comment.
