Rabat – Chelsea are making surprise moves for veteran players 36-year-old Jordan Henderson and 35-year-old Danny Welbeck.
Welbeck, who signed a new contract with Brighton in March that runs until the end of the 2026/2027 campaign, is a strong choice in Xabi Alonso’s squad. He is an experienced player who scored 13 Premier League goals in 37 matches last season.
Although he signed a new contract, Brighton is expected to part ways with Danny Welbeck if Chelsea submit a suitable offer.
Henderson, who was part of the 2026 World Cup England squad, is currently recovering from an injury sustained during a celebration following England’s win against Mexico at the World Cup.
Signed from Ajax to Brentford 12 months ago, the England international previously turned out for Al-Ettifaq following his 2023 Liverpool exit.
His value extends beyond his performances on the field. Tuchel credited the 35-year-old’s rallying pre-match speech for England’s 6-4 victory over France in the World Cup third-place play-off.
The Athletic says the Blues are leading the chase for the former Liverpool captain, though several other Premier League sides are also interested.
Alonso is aspiring to build a competitive team, one that combines experience, quality and mentality.
Both players represent experience and leadership to support a young team. The club can move quickly for Henderson given his free-agent status. Welbeck’s move is more complicated; it will require discussions with Brighton before anything is signed.
