Rabat – Morocco women’s national team head coach Jorge Vilda has expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness ahead of Thursday’s key Group A encounter against Alegria.
He noted that the Atlas Lionesses are determined to claim all three points and move a step closer to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking during Wednesday’s pre-match press conference, the Spanish coach said Morocco’s opening victory provided a positive start to the tournament but insisted the team has already turned its attention to the next challenge.
“The first match is behind us,” Vilda said, emphasizing that previous results will have no bearing on what happens against Algeria.
“What matters now is the performance we deliver on the pitch.”
Vilda described Algeria as a disciplined and well-organized opponent, highlighting the team’s defensive solidity while warning that they have also shown significant improvement going forward.
He pointed to Algeria’s ability to threaten through quick counterattacks and set pieces, saying Morocco will need to produce one of their strongest displays of the tournament to secure victory.
The Spanish coach acknowledged the importance of Thursday’s fixture, noting that a win would leave the Atlas Lionesses in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.
He also hailed the atmosphere within the squad, describing the group as united and driven by a strong collective spirit.
On the tactical side, Vilda expects a tightly contested encounter, saying Algeria are unlikely to rely solely on defensive football despite their organized backline.
The Morocco coach also confirmed that all 26 players in his squad are available for selection, giving him a full roster to choose from ahead of the match.
Vilda concluded by calling on Moroccan supporters to create another strong atmosphere in Rabat, saying the backing of the home crowd could provide an important boost as the Atlas Lionesses look to take another step toward a place in the quarterfinals.
