Agadir – European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica has praised Morocco’s cooperation with Spain and the European Union on migration management following talks with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on the situation in Ceuta.
In a statement shared after the meeting, Šuica described the exchange with Bourita as “constructive,” while addressing concerns linked to migration pressures around the Spanish enclave.
“Illegal migration, migrant smuggling and trafficking can only be addressed together,” the European commissioner said, stressing the need for coordinated efforts between partner countries to tackle irregular migration networks.
Šuica expressed appreciation for Morocco’s response and cooperation with Spanish authorities, commending “Morocco’s swift action, its close cooperation in support of Spain and the prompt readmissions, in line with applicable law.”
The EU official reiterated Brussels’ recognition of Morocco as a key partner in addressing migration challenges, describing the country as “a close and long-standing partner of the EU.”
The EU and Morocco would continue working together “on migration management and towards a deepened EU-Morocco Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership,” she stressed.
Šuica’s remarks came after a sharp increase in attempts by Moroccan migrants to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco in recent days.
During the incident, the two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation to restore border security and ensure its safety.
Morocco and the EU continue strengthening cooperation on migration, border management, and security issues, with Rabat repeatedly emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach based on shared responsibility and international cooperation.
